La tecnologia è stata essenziale nello sviluppo della diagnostica cardiologica e nei sui trattamenti a partire dalla prima registrazione accurata di un elettrocardiogramma, nel 1895. Nel XXI secolo, significativi progressi continuano a succedersi sempre più frequentemente e sembra evidente che ci sia un alto potenziale di miglioramento nella qualità della salute combinanto conoscenza medica nell'area cardiologica con le tecnologie ingegneristiche, specialmente quelle derivate dalla comunicazione, l'elettronica e l'informatica.
