May 2003 - December 2003: Contracted as laboratory assistant by EAWAG (Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology) - Zurich, Switzerland.
Collaboration within the European research project BIOCARTE for the construction of bacterial biosensors based on à la carte regulators, in particular: Mutagenesis and selection of HbpR variants with novel effector specificities Engineering a site-specific chromosomal recombination system to assemble each of the novel regulators plus promoter and reporter gene within a predetermined site of the P.putida chromosome
Used techniques: General molecular cloning techniques, DNA sequencing, random and site-directed mutagenesis, SDS-page, western blotting, protein purification, GMSA (gel mobility shift assay), standard microbiological methods, fluorimetry and fluorescent-assited cell sorting (FACS).
February 2003: University of Verona – Faculty of Natural-Physics-Mathematics Science - Verona, Italy. Degree in Agro-Industrial Biotechnology; final mark 109/110, in regular course of studies. Discussion of the experimental thesis titled: “Phenotypic and phylogenetic characterisation of Burkholderia sp. strain DBT1, an interesting bacterium for bioremediation protocols”
February 2002 - October 2002: Master thesis at Helsinki University - Finland. College of Agriculture and Forestry. Department of applied chemistry and microbiology, Microbiology division.
Used techniques: Phylogenetic analysis, primers and probe design for the characterisation of 16S rRNA, Real-Time PCR, standard microbiological methods, Fatty acid analysis, API 20 E – API 20 NE, BIOLOG GN2 Microplates, genomic DNA extraction, soil-DNA isolation, purification, PCR-amplification and gene cloning.
