Esperienze Med Ingegneria, Ravenna, Italy [October 2010 – present] – Consultant on a ICZM (integrated coastal zone management masterplan) project related to the North-Eastern coastal areas of the kazakhstani sector of the Caspian Sea. Biodiversity, key species and habitats characterization are the main issues taken into account to delineate hypothetically more sensible environmental scenarios that will need to be preserved.

Agip KCO (Agip Kazakhstan North Caspian Operating Company NV), Kazakhstan [June 2010 – present] – Sustainable Development Advisor within the Sustainable Development (HSE & SD) Department, Atyrau. Residential status based in Atyrau, Kazakhstan. Focal point for coordinating and taking part to local survey campaigns, mainly focused on endangered endemic species (seals, birds) and, at a wider level, implementing integrated biodiversity and geodiversity studies. Cooperating with other Departments, I am also implementing social activities promoting the Sustainable Development Department visibility (planting trees in schools, spreading environmental sustainability cues, promoting green campaigns, etc).

Agip KCO (Agip Kazakhstan North Caspian Operating Company NV), Kazakhstan [November 2008 – May 2010] – Environmental Engineer for the Environmental Ecology Team within the Heath, Safety & Environment (HSE) Department, Atyrau. Residential status based in Atyrau, Kazakhstan.
Responsible for planning, ameliorating and implementating wildlife (birds, seals) monitoring surveys in the Northern Caspian sector. Responsible for planning and implementing Baseline and Monitoring marine environmental surveys in the Northern Caspian sector.

EcoCAE (Centro Assistenza Ecologica), Ancona, Italy [October – November 2008] – Scientist/Scholarship holder.
Position offered by Regione Marche, Italy to participate to the “Innovation and Experimentation” research scholarship, funded by the ESF. Full time.
Comparing two EU water quality assessment Directives, 76/160/CEE already in use and 2006/7/CE which would supersede the first one by collecting water samples all along the coast of Ancona province. Filtering, incubating and analysing activities were undertaken to carry out the quality assessment and to evaluate the presence of bacteria using selected medium.

ARPAM (Agenzia Regionale per la Protezione Ambientale delle Marche), Ancona, Italy [January – November 2008; July – October 2007] – Trainee/Water monitoring Technician at the Marine Unit of the “Water Department”, Ancona, Italy. Full Time.
Supporting the Marine Unit at ARPAM (Regional Agency for the Marche region Environmental Protection) in carrying out fortnightly/monthly coastal water samplings for the assessment of the water quality according the EU water framework Directive. Water samples, chemico-physical parameters (pH, DO, Chl-a, T, Salinity, Transparency) were collected. Following the same EU Directive, benthic biocenosis were sampled along with zooplankton, while molluscs were sampled to evaluate the presence of heavy metals.
Sampling activities with CTD probes, oxymeters, grabs (Van Veen and Petersen), Jedie nets, Niskin bottles.
Laboratory analysis of samples according the “filtering membrane” methodology. Incubation of filters in proper media for the assessment of the presence of selected bacteria (coliform bacteria and streptococci).
Realisation of monthly bulletins showing charts (by interpolation of chemico-physical parameters) and coastal environment status.

Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, Plymouth, UK [October – December 2007] – Research Assistant.
Position offered by the Leonardo da Vinci “TELMA” Programme, Provincia di Ancona, Ancona, Italy, and funded by the ESF (European Social Fund). Full time.
Supporting Dr Emma Johnston (Univ. New South Wales, Sydney, Australia) in assessing the presence of heavy metals in selected seaweeds (Saccharina Latissima) sampled in South Devon marinas and open coast waters. The study aimed to assess the potential of an environment to become a haven for pollution tolerant fouling communities by studying epifaunal encrusting invertebrates (bryozoans Celleporella hyalina) settling on blades in contamined or not polluted sites.
Analysis of collected algae using international methodologies and standards (mass spectrometry and statistical analysis softwares).

Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ, Leipzig, Germany [November 2006 – March 2007] – Research Assistant at System Ecotoxicology Department.
Position offered by the Leonardo da Vinci “UNIPHARMA GRADUATES II” Programme offered by LaSapienza University, Rome, Italy, and funded by the ESF (European Social Fund). Full time.
Supporting Dr Beketov and Dr Liess in carrying out an ecotoxicological research project on the “effects of selected environmental chemicals on triggering drift of stream macro-invertebrates”. The study aimed to evaluate sub-lethal effects of those chemicals in augmenting target individuals’ activity.

CNR-ISMAR (National Council of Researches – Institute of Marine Science), Ancona, Italy [August – November 2006] – Benthologist. Full time.
Supporting offshore benthic sampling activities in the Adriatic Sea and taxonomic identification. During the “study of benthic communities during environmental surveys close to offshore platforms and artificial reefs”.

Parco Zoo Falconara, Falconara (Ancona), Italy [October 2005 – August 2006] – Zoological Guide. Part Time.
Cooperating, planning, implementing and improving didactic activities at the Zoological garden within a group of biologists/zoologists/naturalists. Arrangement of guided tours, presentations, lessons for schools, focusing on the importance of zoological gardens in preserving animals.
Supporting national and international thematic initiatives cooperating with UIZA, EAZA and WAZA associations.
